The 1889 Sands & McDougall Directory shows John Deering residing in Winchester St, Moonee Ponds, on the south side, at the eastern end nearest the railway line.

Alex Bragiola cleverly identified the house by looking at the high resolution photo which can be downloaded at the State Library of Victoria, and spotting the actual street sign on the left hand side roof eave.

John William Gaston Deering was a builder and contractor.  He was born in America, and died in Perth in 1909 at the age of 84.
