Time Travellers in Essendon, Flemington and the Keilor Plains

House-Photos-by-Street-and-Suburb

Houses-in-Strathmore

This photo is Allan Williams standing in front of his blue stone wall in November 1965 at 27 Hillsyde Pde, Strathmore. He designed and  built the wall himself (with help from his children). The wall is still there.  Allan designed and built the house too. It was the first house in (then) Broadmeadows Council to have an ensuite. He had to fight hard to have the plans approved as the Council had not heard of the concept of an ensuite.  All photos with permission of Allan Williams.

View from the back of the property overlooking the Strathmore High School oval.   Allan Williams took a number of photos

following the progress of the Strathmore By-pass.

Allan shows that a car could be driven right round the block and onto the balcony, with this photo showing his mother's Mini.  It took him until 1973 to finish the retaining walls and build a one bedroom flat on the lower level.  Hillsyde Pde also featured a games room with billiards, ping pong table, dart board, and 20m air rifle range. It had a four car garage and and full size workshop.

Construction of 27 Hillside Pde commenced in April 1962. These two photos are of the “team of Italians excavating rock and

cleaning the site” as per Allan’s notes on the back of each.
