The two photos show the girls of Ascot Vale West State School, winners of the Fitzgerald Cup for Basket Ball in 1928 and 1929 in the Northern District sports competition.  Alice Lane may have been the Lane who took out a first in the Girls under-15 80 yard race for Ascot Vale West, mentioned in the same report as the one below.

ESSENDON WINS COMBINED MEETING.

The ten local State schools of the Essendon, Flemington and Ascot Vale districts, representing about 6500 scholars, held their annual combined sports yesterday on the Essendon cricket ground. Essendon, the 1928 winners, again won fairly easily, but there was a great fight for second place, which eventually went to Ascot Vale West, with Flemington third. The final points were:— Essendon (E.), 50; Ascot Vale West (A.V.W.), 24; Flemington (F.), 22; Kensington (K.), 21; Moonee Ponds West (M.P.W.), 20; Flemington Domestic Arts (F. Dom. A.) (competing in girls' events only), 10; Ascot Vale (A. V.), 7; Essendon North (E.N.) and Aberfeldie (Aberf.), 2 each. Points were awarded two for a first and one for second in individual races, and four for first and two for second in teams' races.....

At the conclusion of the meeting, Cr. Fitzgerald presented to the four schools which this year have been premiers in their  respective sports, the cups and shields, which had been donated by himself for annual competition. Thus Essendon received the athletics cup, while Maribyrnong took the swimming shield, Ascot Vale the football cup, and Ascot Vale West the basket ball cup.

The School continued to be successful in Basket Ball, taking out the Premiership in 1930, 1932 and 1933, and were runners up in 1931.
