Time Travellers in Essendon, Flemington and the Keilor Plains

Wombat Club,

Railway Place, Flemington,

1892-1894

The Wombat Club, a social club for young men of the district, met in rooms in Railway Place, Flemington, though the exact location is not known as yet.  Larger social functions were held in the New Hall in Racecourse Road.  Their only known activities seem to have been smoke nights and fundraising dances and concerts to help unfortunate cases in the district. Two of the members at least, Mr Godso and and Mr Messent lived in Railway Place. The club appears to have begun in about 1892.  They were still going in 1894, but no further reports have been located.   Given the number of smoke nights, they might have run out of puff.

Flemington and Kensington Council - Correspondence

From T. Terry, hon. Secretary of the Wombat Club, recently started in the district, offering to let a room for a library. It appeared that after the receipt of this letter, an interview with the Library Committee had taken place, and it had been decided not to take any further action. Cr. Barrett said he thought that as the Council had a lot of books locked up for years, something should be done to utilise them. The position of the Club's rooms in Railway place was a good one, and if the rent was reasonable, the Council ought not to consider a few shillings in such a matter. Crs. Blackwell and Dalglish, as members of the Library Committee, explained that they had met the members of the Club, but after a discussion, could not come to any satisfactory arrangement. In the first place, they wanted 12s. 6d. per week for the rent of one room; and secondly, the Club declined to appoint a caretaker to look after the books. The matter was finally referred to the  Library Committee.

WOMBAT CLUB SMOKE NIGHT.

A very enjoyable "smoke night" was given by the Wombat Club in the New Hall Newmarket, on Thursday evening. Mr. Harry Messent, the popular president of the club, occupied the chair, and there was a large muster of members as well as a good sprinkling of visitors, principal amongst whom was Cr. Josiah Prout, one of the club's most hearty supporters.

The tables were laden with refreshments, and everything possible had been done to make visitors feel thoroughly at home. An excellent programme of vocal and instrumental music had been prepared, some of the performances being far above the ordinary standard, and quite good enough for any first class concert. One gentleman who sang several songs and contributed greatly to the evening's enjoyment, had been induced to come all the way from Albert Park to assist in the entertainment, and the hearty manner in which he was applauded showed how much his efforts were appreciated. The local talent was also exceedingly good, and the arrangements altogether were without a hitch. Messrs. Godso, Cooper, Murphy, Quinton junr., and numerous others whose names we were unfortunately not able to ascertain at the time, were most amusing, and the hours sped only too quickly by.

At the conclusion of the lengthy programme, the president, in a short address, pointed out the many advantages to be derived by young men joining the club, which was purely of a social character, and had been formed to bring one another more into harmony. They had the opportunity of improving themselves and acquiring  information by coming into contact with each other, which could not fail to be of service to them; in fact, the club supplied a long felt want in the district. He referred to the very small amount of the subscription, viz, 2s. monthly, which would not be felt by anyone; while as a means of harmless enjoyment, the club presented features that could not be surpassed. He invited any of the visitors present who desired to join to hand in their names to the hon. secretary (Mr. Long), who would be pleased to receive them. Besides endeavouring to provide musical programmes of an enjoyable nature, the members always had a few shillings to spare for the assistance of any deserving cases of distress that might come under their notice, and, in fact, the object of the Wombats was to do as much good as possible with the means at their disposal. Cr. Prout moved a vote of thanks to the chairman, and took occasion to express his delight at the programme so successfully rendered, and which had afforded them all so much pleasure. He wished the club every success and hoped there would be a large number of new members. Mr. Quinton seconded the motion, which was unanimously carried.

The following is the complete programme :-Overture (piano and violin), " Poet and Peasant," Messrs. Dawson and Le Careler; song, "The Miner," Mr. Barnaby; song, "Tyrolean," Mr. Godso; song, "The Bay of Biscay," Mr. Sharp recitation, Mr. Lynch ; song, "I Seek For Thee in Every Flower;" song, "Dan O'Brien's Wake," Mr. Fitzgerald ; song, "Oh the Sea," Mr. Murphy; recitation, "A Night's Adventure," Mr. Ford ; overture (piano and violin), Messrs, Dawson and Le Careler ; song, German, Mr. Cooper; song, " Marguerite," Mr. Norris; song, " That Was Me," Mr. Bruce; song, Mr. Hayes; recitation, Mr. Craven ; song, "Jolly Boys' Club," Mr. Godso; recitation, Mr. Hamilton; song, "The Friar of Old," Mr. Ferguson ; recitation, "Death of the Old Squire," Mr. Lynch; song, "What Some People Say in Melbourne," and "The Road to Ruin," Mr. Murphy ; Some very amusing character sketches were given by Mr. Quinton, junr., and a capital rendering of "The Shop Walker" and "Comrades" was given by Mr. Maloney

A meeting of gentlemen interested in the proposed concert for the benefit of Mrs. Clark, of Kensington, who, by the  recent death of her son, Horatio, has been left in distressed circumstances with a family of seven children, will be held in the Wombat Club Room, Railway Place, New market, this evening at 8 o'clock. The promoters trust that in view of the laudable object of the concert, it is hoped that all who can conveniently attend will put in an  attendance at the meeting. As the district has always been to the front in assisting good works of this kind, we trust that in the present case the same interest which has been previously displayed will not be found wanting.

The members of the Wombat Club gave another of their enjoyable smoke nights in the New Hall, Newmarket, on Monday evening. Mr. Harry Messent, president of the Club, occupied the chair, and there was a very large gathering of members and friends. A lengthy and varied programme was gone through, some of the contributions being really excellent, and a most pleasant evening was passed. Refreshments were provided on the usual liberal scale, and every inducement was given for visitors to make their 'miserable lives happy' for the time being.

A concert in aid of the widow and child of the late Constable James Paul Slattery, who was killed on the railway line at Flemington, will be held in the New Hall Racecourse road, Newmarket, on Thursday, May 4th. A most attractive programme has been arranged, and the police band have volunteered to assist. The concert is under the auspices of the A.N.A., C.Y.M.S, and the Wombat Club. As the object is a most praiseworthy one, and the deceased constable was so well and favourably known in the district, no doubt the residents will show their sympathy with the bereaved widow by attending the concert and thus making the proceeds as substantial as possible.
