3354 Pte W E G (Pip) Powell of the 38 Inf Bn enlisted in June 1917, aged 18, and embarked for training in England in December 1917.   The studio props include the log-haired woollen mat which appears in photographs for the next twenty years, and the nebulous painted backdrop which is used for a while but falls out of favour in Frank Rider's time at the studio.  Postcard courtesy of David Towler.

Unidentified couple taken at the Dover Studios, Moonee Ponds.  The date needs further work, but the man is wearing a "Returned from Active Service Badge" on his lapel, which suggests it was taken during the war.  There would be no need to wear it for very long after the war. The badge was designed to stop harrassment of young men who were apparently in good health and not in the army.  From the Eileen Wilson Collection, courtesy of the State Library of Victoria Collection, H2011.20/75
