This is the photographic studio at Cole's Book Arcade in Melbourne.   Note the camera on a tripod with wheels on the right.  There are a variety of conventional studio props. On view are backdrops with the choice of a woodland scene on the left and balustraded balcony on the right, a rustic fence on the right, a bentwood chair in the centre, a chaise longue on the right, and a fringed stool in the centre.  A potted aspidistra lurks behind the camera, and to the right of that is a decorative  screen.  A papier mache tree trunk and fake stone column are on the left, and a fur rug on the polished floor. In front of the stone column is a short mast and ropes to create a nautical scene. The main lighting would come from a skylight in the roof, with some electric lamps for highlights.   Courtesy of the State Library of Victoria Collection.

This portrait of an unidentified young man taken in the Cole's Studio uses some of the above

props- the backdrop on the left, the bentwood chair in the centre, with the addition of a

potplant and what-not table.  The result is fussy and discordant. Courtesy of the State
