Albert Edward Young was born in Flemington in 1858 and attended Flemington State School. Edwin Dangerfield was a classmate and friend. In 1884 he took up the contract to run the Moonee Ponds Post Office which he did with the assistance of family. Young was also a real estate agent very involved with the process of subdividing the district. At first his offices were at Post Office Chambers next to or actually in the PO though later he set up at 33 Puckle St. His focus was probably not so much on the Post Office for in 1888 Councillors concurred with Mayor Buzzard’s pointed resolution re the need for a local Postmaster who should be required to devote the whole of his time to his office. After his election as Councillor in 1895 he went on to represent the Moonee Ponds Ward for 17 years. Young became the first locally born Mayor in 1902 and served another term as Mayor in 1909. He was a member of the Melbourne & Metropolitan Board of Works, sunk a gold mining shaft in 1894, involved in the formation of the North Melbourne Tram and Electric Lighting Co, and in 1910 participated in setting up the Moonee Ponds Theatre. He died in his Buckley St home in 1936 leaving an estate of £17,638.
